Why?

Why did we all go to the library this morning to read and check out a pile of books about fish and the ocean? Because we are preparing for next week's spring getaway! I finalized the details this morning. Our students' spring break was actually a few weeks ago, but Dave remained too busy to take any time off. Next week looks light, though, so we are spending 3 (maybe 4 if it goes well) days in Monterey. This is a great place right on the coast where we frequently make day trips. We visit Pebble Beach, Cannery Row, artichokes in Castroville and have even taken a whale-watching cruise. After a little research and conversation with friends, I've found a whole list of other things to do in this neat area. Obviously it will depend on the kids' naps and schedules, but here are some ideas on our itinerary:

The Aquarium-- ranked the 3rd coolest in the country by Parents magazine, this huge fish museum has an incredible interactive kids exhibit and the girls are still young enough to be free!

Dennis the Menace Park-- a great outdoor playground we know Ella will love.

Pt. Lobos-- a state park right on the beach, teeming with wildlife and hiking trails.

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

The Bagpiper at Spanish Bay-- Apparently every evening at sunset this guy roams the golf course and beach playing his bagpipe. Spanish Bay is a ritzy resort in Pebble Beach that allows the public to come listen, they even light a campfire for us.

Our hotel also has beach access and a pool.

We leave on Tuesday and hope this little trip will be a wonderful retreat from the daily grind!

Wow, sounds like great fun! You'll have to give us recommendations when you return since those places are driving distance for the Gilmores too. We're headed to Yosemite this weekend to celebrate our 5th anniversary and remember our wedding there...

I hope you enjoy your time away! We are doing the same thing in the coming week - taking a break that is. However, we're heading south to Lloyd's family in Chino. We'll have to get together again soon!
