Amazingly, Ella has been sick very little and has had no serious accidents in her 21 months of life. That changed yesterday when she put her right hand on a hot burner on our electric stove and got 2nd degree burns all over it. It was a very traumatic day.
We were making breakfast and it happened in an instant. The worst part of the whole ordeal was knowing how much pain she was in. When I burned my arm slightly on a cookie sheet a while back, I was in agony! Ella has 7 blisters on her hand! Throughout the day she would cry, wave it around and whimper, "Hot, hot!" We consulted with a friend who has been through child burns and an on-call doctor and both told us there was nothing that could be done for Ella that we couldn't just do at home and that the main issue would be pain management. So, with regular doses of children's Motrin, a bowl of ice water and some Solarcaine, we survived.
Ella actually slept great last night and seems like her normal self today. The next challenge will be keeping her hand clean, wrapped and infection free over the next few days as the blisters pop.
I do keep asking myself, "Why did I have to have scrambled eggs for breakfast? We should have just had cereal!" Guilt stinks!
