A Sunny Saturday in the Snow

One of the highlights of Dave's youth group year is the Winter Retreat. Dave rents a huge, beautiful cabin in the foothills and has 3 days of relaxation, play and spiritual growth with his high schoolers. We know that the students love this weekend too because in the 4 years he's done it, his attendance has more than doubled! This year Ella and I went up for a day trip to visit him, the kids and most of all-- the SNOW! Ella has seen snow twice in her life (once in May at Yosemite and once in August at Mammoth...both times wearing shorts!) This was real snow, though, that you could play in, form snowballs and snowmen in and construct long, dangerous, full of jumps tubing runs in. Ella was a little baffled by the snow, but seemed to enjoy the experience. Once again, I am just in love with where we live. How amazing that we can leave 70 degree weather, drive an hour and half and find ourselves in a forest of winter wonderland! The snow was deep and tacky, but the weather was still gorgeous (upper 50's I would guess). Many of the kids were playing in just T shirts!

Where's Daddy? Ella got a few snowball fight lessons. One of the high schoolers made her this snowball and instructed her to throw it at him! Keeping her mittens on was the biggest challenge of the day.

The snow was pretty deep, walking in it was another challenge.

Dave was so excited to take her sledding when we first pulled up, she doesn't even have her hat or snow pants on yet! Our brave, adventurous girl was actually a little scared of sledding.
