A Fitting End

Each night a ritual ensues. Without discussion the board is pulled out, the cards shuffled and the train cars lined up. What follows is intense-- hand-shaking as trains are laid, heart-pounding as routes are considered and temper-flaring as tracks are stolen, intensity. Our immediate family and a handful of friends will recognize what I am describing: the addictive game Ticket to Ride. It could be argued that we are spending quality time together, but mostly we just end up mad and frustrated with each other at the end of it. You could argue that what I am about to tell you is pretty impressive, or you could just pity us for being super-nerds. The best way I can think to end a wonderful week with Mom and Dad is to publish our weekly scores, the culmination of 7 games.

Dad (bringing up the rear as the caboose): 699 points
Jen: 918 points (just a 2 point difference from 2nd place I feel compelled to point out!)
Mom: 920 points
Dave: 1,134 points (Yep, that's an average of about 160 points a game. He's an unstoppable locomotive!)

Has Dad ever won a game of "Trains"? -- and has Dave ever lost?

It looks like everyone had a wonderful visit and it sounds like Ella had a special birthday. Thanks so much for keeping us all up to date with the blog!

Ah, yes, Trains.
Nick's parents arrive tonight. I have a feeling they, too, will want to play. It sounds like the VM family is quite fanatical about it-how fun. :)
Sherry is quite diplomatic about games but has no problem beating either her son or daughter-in-law.
I'm glad you are having a nice visit with the parents!
Nick's dad is here for General Synod (in Holland this year), and Nick's mom is going to hang out with us and perhaps sew some things for the nursery. Nick glanced at my belly last night and said-I better get working on that crib! Which is funny since I am not even really that big. But I am loving the drawstring pants! Thanks for the tip!

Whoa, baby! We saw those scores and we were wondering, "How in the world?!" Yes, we've done the tourney too but never kept adding up the points. So fun!

Do we get credit for introducing Dave to this addiction? Yikes! Choo-Choo!
